Deborah Newbould
I am a sculptor based in Leeds and studied Fine Art at Bradford college.I work from my home studio.
My inspiration began with Nicola Hicks's plaster and straw sculptures. I developed my own style through a range of experimental processes, building figures with mixed clays and incorporating combustible materials to create varied textures and crevices.
One project began with a full-body cast of myself, made with unfired clay. The work was placed outdoors to weather and return to the earth. This process was documented daily, we called her the Venus of Bradford.
This led me to develop my practice around themes of growth, decay and the life cycle.
